Saccarelli argues that Gramsci is popular in academia for all the wrong reasons. The ongoing academic misappropriations of Gramsci were prepared and enabled by a long history of Stalinist falsifications. At the same time, by reviewing the salient episodes of his political life, the book demonstrates that Gramsci never represented a genuine political alternative to Stalinism. Saccarelli makes the case that only Trotskyism constitutes such an alternative.
